Why do aged samples of aldehydes effervesce (give off bubbles of gas) when treated with sodium bicarbonate? - sodium bicarbonate to treat athletes foot
Aldehydes are easily oxidized to carboxylic acids ... which in turn react with NaHCO3-CO2 gases are emitted, for example ...
CH3CHO + [O] ---> CH3COOH
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ---> H2O + CH3COONa + CO2gas

can be oxidized to acids in the open
